"After hitting a wrong note accidentally, play the same note again like you really mean it."
"..accidents can hold the key to innovations."
"..even though trees do not grow to the sky, their roots continue to grow."
"Develop your sense of perspective. When everything around you looks like weeds, remember: From the heavens, all is a garden.
Then get to weeding."

"Empty your cup and keep going. Same mountain, farther up."
"The moment we begin distinguishing sight from sound from smell, separating things, naming and catergorizing them, we begin the rational process that leads us away from experiencing true oneness."
"..the poetry of imperfection."
"But too much of the music being made today promotes dubious values - instant gratification and ego glorification."

excerpts from zen guitar by philip toshio sudo.

this book was given to me not long ago by a very special person. I had glanced over it before, mostly looking at the quotes at the beginning of each section (which range from keith richards to paul simon to allan holdsworth). I finished the book last night and it's a great and easy read. as the name implies, it sticks to basic principles to mentally prepare you for playing rather than attempting to take you on a step-by-step how-to lesson on guitar. if you're just starting out and you can't really get a feel for it, this is a great place to go for answers. and at the same time, if you've been playing for years, this can be a nice refresher on how to get a little closer to the path you may have strayed from through all the frustration and ruts.

check it out.
